On Thursday, July 18, the Lithuanian Seimas finally denounced the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use of Cluster Munitions.
This was reported by Yevropeiska Pravda with reference to LRT.
Lithuania's withdrawal from this international treaty removes restrictions on the acquisition, stockpiling and, in the event of war, the use of cluster munitions.
The relevant decision was supported by 103 members of the Seimas with one vote against and four other deputies abstaining.
One of the initiators of the withdrawal, Lithuanian Defense Minister Laurinas Kasciunas, said that this step was motivated by the changing geopolitical situation.
“Such conventions are valid when all countries adhere to them. In this case, the problem is that the Russian Federation, which is carrying out aggression against Ukraine and has imperialistic ambitions, does not adhere to these rules,” Kasciunas said in the Seimas.
The minister also assured that modern cluster munitions are much safer and the consequences of their use can be controlled.
