Sweden may transfer a large number of units to NATO's direct command

Jul 4, 2023

Swedish Defense Minister Paul Johnson does not rule out that a significant number of Swedish military units will come under the direct command of NATO after the country joins the Alliance.

He said this in an interview with Ekot radio station, as cited by Vasterbottens-Kuriren.

"Yes, I believe we will do it. But we will need to discuss with the Swedish Armed Forces what resources and capabilities we have," Jonson said.

He noted that Sweden is interested in NATO having the ability to deter war.

According to the minister, from the Swedish point of view, there are advantages in transferring a large number of units under NATO command.

"Sweden has stated that it wants to be a reliable, committed and influential ally in NATO, and this will naturally affect our commitment to the Alliance and our goal of strengthening NATO's defense planning," Jonsson added.
