Czech Ministry of Defense spokesman Karel Čapek said that his ministry is evaluating the Polish project to form the Ukrainian Legion and is considering whether a similar initiative could be organized in the Czech Republic.
This was reported by Radio Prague International.
According to the Czech Ministry of the Interior, more than one hundred thousand Ukrainian refugees, men aged 18 to 65, are registered in this country.
Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan has previously stated that there will be no forced return of Ukrainians from the Czech Republic as long as temporary protection is in place.
However, Defense Minister Jana Černohová told Czech TV that Ukrainians in the Czech Republic could voluntarily, without coercion or pressure, take part in a potential military formation.
“The Ukrainian community living in the Czech Republic is numerous, even without taking into account the wave that came as a result of the war. So it would make sense,” she said.
“We want to continue training the Ukrainian military, so why don't we also train Czech citizens, Ukrainians by nationality, and create some kind of an entity out of them,” the minister added.
