Former President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was “probably” ready for a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris before the November election, but left the door open to refuse to have one.
This was reported by The Hill, according to Yevropeiska Pravda.
Trump and President Joe Biden agreed to hold two debates - on June 27 on CNN and on September 10 on ABC News. Biden's disastrous performance at the June debate and subsequent events led to the president's withdrawal from the election.
Kamala Harris secured the support of enough delegates to become the likely Democratic nominee. The Democratic Party convention, where she may be nominated as the official candidate, will be held on August 19-22 in Chicago.
Harris said she is ready for a debate with Trump, and she and her campaign have accused him of “backpedaling.”
“The answer is yes, I'll probably do a debate,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, arguing that any debate should take place before the primary.
However, Trump listed reasons why he would not participate in the debate, although Ingraham warned that it would give his critics an opportunity to say that he was afraid.
Trump pointed to his lead in national polls and polls in key states, although these polls show the candidates running neck and neck.
He also argued that the public knows where both candidates stand on the issues.
“The answer is yes, but I can also make a case for not doing it,” Trump added. “Also, I don't like to encourage fake news... They're going to make tens of millions of dollars on this debate. I don't like ABC,” he said.-
