US presidential candidate Donald Trump has questioned the fact that his likely rival Kamala Harris is a black woman and suggested that she chose this self-identification for election reasons.
This was reported by The New York Times, according to Yevropeiska Pravda.
On Wednesday, July 31, Donald Trump said that Harris should have identified herself by her Indian descent, and that her self-identification as a black woman was an election ploy.
Trump's words came in a speech at a gathering of media professionals from the National Association of Black Journalists. He also said he was the “best president” for black Americans since Abraham Lincoln.
“I've known her for a long time, although not really directly, and she's always been of Indian descent... And she only talked about her Indian descent. I didn't know she was black until recently, a few years ago, when she started emphasizing that she was black. Now she wants to be identified as black. So I don't know, is she Indian or is she black?
I respect both identities, but it seems like she doesn't, because she was always of Indian descent until she suddenly made a U-turn and became black,” Trump said.
Kamala Harris' mother is an Indian-American, and her father is black. Kamala herself accepts both of these identities and has always said she is black.
He also raised this issue in a post on his social media platform Truth Social. “Crazy Kamala says she's Indian, not black... She uses everything, including her racial identity,” Trump wrote.
Harris responded to Trump's statements by saying that he was once again “putting on a show” with “divisive and disrespectful statements.”
“The American people deserve a leader who tells the truth, who doesn't respond with hostility and anger when presented with the facts. We need a leader who understands that our differences don't divide us - they are the greatest source of our strength,” Harris said.-
