Democrat Gary Peters, chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security, said the committee is launching a bipartisan investigation into the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
This was reported by CNN.
The committee hopes to speed up the process and hold hearings before the Senate goes on its August recess.
"We're going to have an investigation, a bipartisan investigation by the Homeland Security Committee to look at the events that took place and determine if there were security gaps that we need to close," Peters said.
"We will try to expedite this. That's why we are now asking for detailed briefings for the committee members," the senator said.
He added that the senators would use their investigation into the security failures of the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol as a "template" for these new hearings.
"If you recall, we conducted a comprehensive security assessment after January 6. In that investigation, we made a number of recommendations, and many of those recommendations have now been incorporated into security practices here at the Capitol," the Michigan Democrat said.
