The Colombian leader once again called the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip "genocide." Earlier, he suspended arms purchases from Israel and compared the country's actions in the region to those of Nazi Germany.

"Tomorrow (May 2 - ed.), diplomatic relations with the State of Israel will be severed... because they have a genocidal president. If Palestine dies, humanity will die, and we will not allow it to die," Petro said.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz responded to Petro's comments on social network X.

"History will remember that Gustavo Petro chose to side with the most disgusting monsters known to mankind, who burned babies, killed children, raped women, and kidnapped innocent civilians," he wrote.

"Relations between Israel and Colombia have always been warm, and no anti-Semitic and hateful president can change that. The State of Israel will continue to protect its citizens without worry or fear," Katz added.
