Greek Defense Ministry denies covert arms supplies to Ukraine

May 16, 2024

On Thursday, Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias denied media reports that Greece was secretly sending 250 containers of weapons to Ukraine.

This was reported by Ekathimerini.

Greece has been supplying Ukraine with weapons and ammunition for the past two years but explained that it could not send weapons that are critical to its defense. In terms of artillery, Greece has already provided either directly or through the sale to the Czech Republic 155-mm and 203-mm cannons, as well as a large number of shells.

“There is no transfer of weapons to Ukraine,” Dendias told New Left MP Sia Anagnostopoulou during a parliamentary debate on a bill to establish a Defense Innovation Center.

“We did not hide who and what we sell under the country's international agreements. We sell obsolete materials to the Czech Republic and the United States, saving resources, given that the destruction of these materials alone would exceed 100 million euros,” he said in parliament.

The Efimeritha ton Syntakton newspaper reported in its article that Greek weapons and ammunition are allegedly being secretly transported by rail through Romania in containers, with the first two containers being sent two days ago from the Kato Gefira station near Thessaloniki.
