Greece refused to transfer air defense systems to Ukraine

Apr 26, 2024

Allied countries have asked Greece to send Ukraine S-300 or Patriot air defense systems, but Athens will not do so, as the country needs air defense systems for its own defense. This was stated by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, RBC-Ukraine reports citing iefimerida.

"Greece is not going to send Ukraine either an S-300 or Patriot. We were asked, and we explained why we cannot do this," Mitsotakis said.

He noted that Greece supported Ukraine in various ways, including with defense materials.

"But we said from the first moment that we cannot get rid of weapon systems that are crucial for our deterrence capabilities. We have a surplus of material that we can support Ukraine with, we have done that, and I think it's the right choice. And if we can find that material, we will continue to do so. But the air defense systems that you mentioned are critical to the protection of Greek airspace and will not be provided to Ukraine," the Greek prime minister added.
