Ukraine receives anti-tank missiles and artillery shells from US

May 5, 2024

On April 28 and 29, Ukraine received weapons from a new aid package from the United States. It was a batch of anti-tank missiles and 155-millimeter artillery shells, The New York Times reported.

The next day, April 30, Patriot missiles provided by Spain arrived in Poland. They will soon be at the front, the official said.

But analysts say that, at best, Ukraine will be able to stabilize the situation at the front with the new aid by the summer and, at worst, by the end of the year.

The situation is exacerbated by the fact that not all the promised weapons can be delivered immediately. The American official noted that it takes time to figure out what can be transferred to Ukraine without depleting NATO units that need to be combat-ready, such as Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and Humvee armored personnel carriers. And 155-millimeter artillery shells, which Ukraine desperately needs, are in short supply.

The newspaper writes that Ukraine will receive an additional Patriot system from Germany no earlier than the end of June. On Monday, May 6, about 70 Ukrainian soldiers will begin a six-week course at an air base in Eastern Germany. After the training, it will take about two days to transport the huge missile launchers, radar, and other parts to a logistics center in Poland and hand them over to Ukrainian officials for transportation across the border.

In late June, F-16 fighter jets could arrive in Ukraine, the NYT reports.
