Russia resumes oil deliveries by state-owned Sovcomflot to India

Apr 26, 2024

A vessel controlled by the US-sanctioned Russian shipping giant Sovcomflot unloaded fuel oil at a port in western India on Friday.

Reuters reports this with reference to two informed sources.

The SCF Baltica vessel, carrying 90,000 metric tons of fuel oil for Reliance Industries, the operator of the world's largest refinery in Jamnagar in Gujarat, is expected to leave the port later on Friday after being fully unloaded, the sources said.

On February 23, the United States imposed sanctions on the Russian shipping giant and identified 14 crude oil tankers as property in which Sovcomflot had an interest after the war in Ukraine.

During the visit to India, U.S. officials said Washington was seeking stable global supplies and had not asked India to cut back on Russian oil imports - a remark that Indian refinery sources said helped calm concerns about sanctions.

The SCF Baltica is not among the 14 vessels that Washington has sanctioned in recent months.
