As Putin prepares to be sworn in for another six years as president, the invasion has become part of everyday life for many Russians, defying expectations that the pressure of international sanctions and deepening isolation would eventually turn them against him. Many are not protesting, but rallying around the "flag."

The Kremlin is using the biggest European conflict since World War II to reorganize Russia, combining fierce nationalism with a potent mix of nostalgia for Soviet times and imperial traditions with a crackdown on dissent.

As a result, Putin is under little domestic pressure to end the fighting, despite the huge military losses, which poses a problem for Ukraine's American and European allies, who are trying to raise the price for Russia for prolonging the war, which is now in its third year.
