In 2024, the German defense concern Rheinmetall plans to provide Ukraine with hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammunition. This was announced by the concern's CEO Armin Papperger at an event at the Industrial Club of Düsseldorf organized by the Association of Business Journalists, the German newspaper Handelsblatt reported on May 3.

According to him, the group is currently engaged in the production of artillery ammunition.

"Artillery is changing the rules," Papperger said.

According to him, the ammunition to be transferred to Ukraine will include prototypes of artillery shells with a range of 100 km.

It is noted that Russia produces a large amount of artillery ammunition, while Ukraine has a shortage of it, and therefore cannot fully respond to Russian attacks. In this regard, Papperger said that the Western world is "not ready for a conventional war."

In both Europe and the United States, artillery ammunition production capacity has been gradually declining in recent years, Handelsblatt notes. Before Russia's attack on Ukraine, Rheinmetall's annual capacity was about 70,000 shells. This year's production is expected to rise to 700,000, and in the medium term - to 1.1 million.
