Ukrainians will be able to stay in Germany with an expired passport

Apr 25, 2024

Citizens of Ukraine who receive or extend a temporary residence permit in Germany do not have to have a valid Ukrainian passport.

This is reported by DW based on the response to their request from a representative of the Berlin Senate, i.e. the government of Berlin, which has the status of one of the 16 federal states.

The publication notes that issues related to the stay of foreigners in Germany fall within the competence of the land authorities.

The official said that the right to stay in Germany and all related opportunities remain unchanged, despite the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to temporarily suspend the provision of consular services for Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 who are abroad.

If a Ukrainian embassy or consulate refuses to issue or renew a passport to a Ukrainian citizen “solely on the grounds of his or her uncompleted military service,” the Berlin Landesamt für Einwanderung (Land Office for Foreigners) could potentially issue him or her a travel document that replaces a passport for traveling abroad.
