Humanitarian affairs coordinator Sigrid Kaag reported this at the meeting of the UN Security Council, Ukrinform's own correspondent in New York reports.

"The introduction of this mechanism will make it possible to ensure the priority, predictability, and transparency of supplies to Gaza," she said.

The new mechanism was developed in response to a Security Council resolution passed in December that asked the Kaag to propose measures to speed up the delivery of humanitarian aid to the war-torn sector.

"As foreseen in the resolution, the mechanism is designed to facilitate the work of all humanitarian partners on the ground and support them," said the coordinator.

According to her, it will initially be applied to aid routes coming from Cyprus and Jordan. Technical consultations with Egypt regarding the land corridor will also be completed soon, and Israel has already been informed by the Kaag.

She added that her office in Gaza will start functioning in the coming weeks. A database and notification system will be created for all goods bound for Gaza, and international observers will be stationed at checkpoints and other places where aid passes - after the appropriate permits from the Israeli authorities.

The coordinator emphasized the importance of a “paradigm change” in the supply of rubber aid, clarifying that it is about increasing its quality and quantity, about proper distribution, and ensuring unhindered delivery to Gaza.

In her opinion, the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) remains "an irreplaceable lifeline for humanitarian aid and must be given the opportunity to fulfill its mandate."

Kaag noted that Israel has taken a number of steps to improve the situation with providing aid to the people of Gaza in accordance with the commitments it made on April 5 in response to requests from the UN and the international community.

In particular, the volumes of cargo were increased, the Erez checkpoint and Ashdod port were opened for them, and the Nahal-Oz water supply line was repaired.

At the same time, according to the official, preparations are underway for the construction of a temporary pier for receiving cargo on the Gaza coast with the participation of the United States and other countries.

At the same time, Kaag repeated the warnings of the UN and a number of countries regarding a possible Israeli operation in Rafah, where at least 1.2 million refugees are concentrated. "Such actions would intensify the humanitarian catastrophe" and would limit "the UN's ability to provide assistance," she emphasized.
