Ukraine's accession to the EU will not cause financial problems

Apr 24, 2024

European Commissioner for Budgetary Affairs Johannes Hahn said that Ukraine's accession to the European Union would not pose significant financial difficulties for the union.

He said this in an interview with the Funke media group, as quoted by the DTS news agency.

According to Hahn, Ukraine's planned accession to the EU may require an increase in the EU budget of up to 20%. However, such an increase will be necessary if the current rules for agricultural aid and structural support within the EU are maintained.

“It sounds gigantic, but it corresponds to only 0.2% of European economic output, and it is certainly possible. It is a worthwhile investment because Ukraine has a huge economic potential,” the European Commissioner explained.

He clarified that a 20% increase in the budget under current conditions would mean an additional 200 billion euros over the EU's seven-year budget period.
