US imposes new sanctions on Iran over cyberattacks

Apr 23, 2024

On April 23, the U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions against two companies and four individuals involved in malicious activities on behalf of the Cyber Electronic Command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran (IRGC).

This is stated in the report of the agency.

Sanctioned individuals and legal entities allegedly carried out cyberattacks against more than a dozen American companies and government agencies. The United States claims that the purpose of these actions is to destabilize critical infrastructure and harm Americans.

Such activities, the US Treasury adds, are carried out not only by the IRGC's cyber forces but also by related shell companies.

The U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have simultaneously announced charges against sanctioned individuals for their role in cyberattacks against U.S. organizations.
