Von der Leyen warns against Russia's influence on European elections

Apr 15, 2024

Two months before the European elections, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, warned against Russian influence on them. This also applies to local elections in the three eastern states of Germany - Saxony, Thuringia, and Brandenburg.

This is reported by the German media outlet BR24.

She said that simultaneously with Russia's aggressive war in Ukraine, the EU has seen an increase in anti-European activity of pro-Russian supporters of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, such as the AfD in Germany.

"Let's not fool ourselves: Putin's friends want to destroy the European Union from within, through a process of disintegration," von der Leyen said.

In this regard, she called on all EU citizens to exercise their democratic right to vote in the June 9 European elections and strengthen the political center.

"We are entering a period when we must defend our democracy and our Europe," von der Leyen warned.

It is worth noting that in 2024, for the first time in history, elections will be held in more than 70 countries with a total population of 4 billion people. And the results of at least some of them, especially in the West, may affect support for Ukraine.
