NATO is not ready to invite Ukraine to membership at this week's meeting

Dec 3, 2024

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is unlikely to heed Ukraine's call for a membership invitation at its meeting on Tuesday, December 3. This would dash Kyiv's hopes for a political boost in anticipation of Donald Trump's return to the White House.

This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Reuters.

The agency recalled that in a letter to his NATO colleagues on the eve of the meeting, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said that the invitation would eliminate one of Russia's main arguments in waging war, namely, preventing Ukraine from joining the Alliance.

However, there are no signs of the necessary consensus among NATO's 32 members to make such a decision at a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels, a number of diplomats said on condition of anonymity.

“It will take weeks and months to reach a consensus. I don't think it will happen tomorrow, I would be very surprised,” a senior NATO diplomat said on Monday.

A senior U.S. official told Reuters that the meeting will focus on increasing support for Ukraine so that it is in the strongest possible position next year “going into possible negotiations.”

“The best way to do that is to increase funding, weapons and mobilization,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
