Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has promised U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to tighten control over the unsecured common border. The promise was made during their meeting in Florida.
This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Reuters.
The agency reminds that on Friday, Trudeau flew to Florida to have dinner with Trump. The visit followed the US president-elect's threat to impose tariffs on Canadian imports if Ottawa does not prevent migrants and drugs from entering America. Since Canada sends 75% of its total exports of goods and services to the United States, tariffs would cause significant damage to the economy.
In a commentary to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who sat at the table with Trudeau and Trump, said that they discussed additional security measures that the country is going to introduce.
“We're going to look at purchasing, for example, additional drones, additional police helicopters, we're going to redeploy personnel... we believe the border is secure. I think it's important to show Canadians and Americans that we are taking visible and powerful steps, and that's what we're going to do,” he said.
LeBlanc also promised that the country would provide more detailed information on the above plans in the coming days and weeks. In particular, Canada will continue to argue that the duties will cause damage to both countries, given how interconnected the economies of the two countries are.
