US President-elect Donald Trump's team is discussing the possibility of holding direct talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. This could give a new diplomatic impetus.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Reuters.
According to the agency, the team believes that a new diplomatic push could reduce the risks of armed conflict. In particular, Trump sees a direct approach that would build on existing relations as the most likely way to break the ice with Kim.
According to sources, political discussions are fluid, and the president-elect has not made any final decisions.
At the same time, it is unclear what Kim Jong-un can offer Trump in return. After all, North Korea has ignored four years of calls from US President Joe Biden to start negotiations without preconditions. And the DPRK hopes to expand its missile arsenal and strengthen relations with Russia.
As a reminder, during his presidential term in 2017-2021, Trump held three meetings with Kim: in Singapore, Hanoi, and on the Korean border - the first time the current US president set foot on the territory of the DPRK. However, their diplomacy did not yield concrete results, although Trump described their talks as “falling in love.”
