Ukraine withdraws Abrams tanks from the front

Apr 26, 2024

Ukraine has been forced to withdraw M1A1 Abrams battle tanks provided by the United States due to the fact that Russian drones can detect and attack them relatively easily.

This was reported to the AR Agency by two American officials.

Since the fall of 2023, when the first Abrams arrived in Ukraine, Russia's massive use of reconnaissance and kamikaze drones has made it difficult for Ukraine to protect its tanks. Five vehicles have been lost as a result of Russian attacks, sources told AR.

As a representative of the U.S. Defense Department explained, the use of drones on the battlefield in Ukraine means that “there is no open terrain that you can just drive through without fear of being detected.”

AR's interlocutors also noted that Ukrainian forces have used the tanks they received from the United States to a very limited extent, without resorting to general combat.
