NATO countries will not shoot down missiles and drones over Ukraine

Oct 4, 2024

The countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will not shoot down missiles and drones over the territory of Ukraine, as such actions will draw them into a war with Russia.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Deputy Spokesperson for the US Department of Defense Sabrina Singh.

According to her, the allies' assistance in shooting down enemy drones over Israel and similar actions in Ukraine are “two very different landscapes and battlefields.”

Singh noted that U.S. President Joe Biden, at the very beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, “instructed us to provide Ukraine with what it needs on the battlefield. And the Armed Forces have been very successful in using air defense and other capabilities to continue to retake their territory.

“The Secretary of State just spoke with Mr. Umerov to get the latest information from the battlefield to better understand what other capabilities they (the Defense Forces - ed.) may need, if any. The president has committed that the United States is not putting boots on the ground in Ukraine, but we support Ukraine in its efforts to regain its sovereign territory,” she said.

Asked whether shooting down enemy targets from Romania or Poland could be considered such “boots on the ground,” Singh said that it would involve Western countries in a war.

“It would mean that we would be involved in the war in a different way. Right now, we feel that Ukraine has been able to successfully defend itself against Russian attacks on its cities, on its population, on its infrastructure. And we will continue to provide them with the support they need to do so,” said the Pentagon deputy spokesperson.
