US President-elect Donald Trump said he understands why Russia attacked Ukraine. According to him, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has repeatedly emphasized that NATO should not be associated with Ukraine.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Sky News.
During a press conference at the Mar-a-Lago residence, Trump was asked whether he would commit to supporting Ukraine during negotiations with Russia.
“Well, I wouldn't tell you if I did,” he replied.
Trump also said that Putin has consistently emphasized that Ukraine should have no ties to NATO.
“It was like it was written in stone. And then Biden said that Ukraine should be able to join NATO. So Russia gets NATO right on its doorstep,” he said.-
According to Trump, it was Biden's statements that led to the war. Thus, he blamed the current US administration for the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.
When asked by a journalist when exactly the United States denied the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO, Trump replied: “I think it's always been clear.”
