Hamas is likely to appoint Khalil al-Haya, who lives in Qatar, as the successor to the leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israel.
This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Bloomberg.
Al-Hayyah made a televised speech on Friday, saying that he was taking on the role of leader at least on a temporary basis. He vowed that Israel's assassination of Sinwar would be a motivation to continue the struggle.
Apparently addressing the Israelis, al-Haya said that the hostages “will not return to you until the aggression in Gaza stops.”
“Israel must withdraw from Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails must be released,” he said.
Al-Khaya is considered a protege of Ismail Haniyeh, who is close to Iran.
