Oct 20, 2024

Currently, NATO members are discussing whether to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance. But there is no consensus on this issue yet.

This was stated by a senior representative of the administration of US President Joe Biden, RBC-Ukraine reports citing the White House.

Thus, on Thursday, October 17, journalists asked how the United States views the plan for Ukraine's victory and its individual aspects, to which a senior administration official said that there is an active conversation about the various elements of the plan that were outlined by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This conversation took place both during the Ukrainian president's visit to the United States and yesterday during a phone call. He noted that as of now, certain points of the plan in terms of providing additional military capabilities are being implemented.

However, there is no consensus on the issue of inviting Ukraine to NATO.

“There is an ongoing discussion among NATO allies about the invitation. There is currently no consensus on whether to offer Ukraine an invitation. But, as you know, at the NATO summit just a few months ago - in July, in mid-July - all 32 allies confirmed that Ukraine is on an irreversible path to membership. So the question is the tactics of how to encourage this path and how to reach a consensus on the next steps,” he said.

Also during his response, the White House official said that Biden wants Ukraine to win, and these efforts will be provided with adequate resources. According to him, this is why the US president called for a meeting in the Ramstein format at the level of leaders, which will most likely take place in November.
