US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin arrived in Kyiv on Monday morning. He plans to discuss the prospects for further assistance to Ukraine, given that the future of American support largely depends on the outcome of the upcoming US presidential election.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to CNN.

The minister's visit coincided with ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine, despite Western sanctions and international military assistance.

During the visit, Austin will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. The main topic of the talks will be to discuss Ukraine's current arms needs and support for the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the coming year.

Austin emphasized the importance of international coalitions created to support Ukraine, noting that thanks to these efforts, Ukraine was able to withstand Russian aggression. However, the outcome of the US presidential election may jeopardize further support, especially if Donald Trump wins, who has repeatedly expressed doubts about continuing to provide assistance to Ukraine.

Austin's visit took place amid an escalating situation on the frontline, where Ukrainian forces continue to face serious challenges.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Austin came to Ukraine without announcing military aid or authorizing long-range strikes deep into Russia.
