Scholz rejects key points of Ukraine's victory plan

Oct 20, 2024

Germany rejects one of the key points of Ukraine's plan to win the war. We are talking about the supply of long-range weapons and an early invitation to join NATO.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, quoted by Bild.

Scholz made the statement in the evening of October 17 after the EU Council summit in Brussels.

He believes that the priority is to prevent Russia's war against Ukraine from turning into a war between Russia and NATO. The Chancellor emphasized that nothing will change his position on the supply of long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.

“I do not consider such supplies to be correct, and it will remain so,” Scholz said.

According to the newspaper, the German chancellor also plans to continue blocking Ukraine's immediate invitation to join NATO. Scholz explained this by the resolution of the last NATO summit in Washington. At that time, NATO allies did not issue an invitation to Ukraine, with the United States and Germany opposed.

The NATO resolution states that an invitation to NATO can only be issued after all allies agree to it and all conditions for membership are met. In particular, these include democratic, economic and security reforms.
