Sanctions against Russia should be consistent and not weakened

Jul 6, 2024

The sanctions imposed on Russia must be consistent and in no way weakened by individual agreements. The EU must realize its responsibility and comply with the rules of sanctions mechanisms.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Ivan Usa, a consultant at the Center for Foreign Policy Studies at the National Institute for Economic Studies.

"First of all, it should be understood that if sanctions are imposed, a certain limit must be set after which these sanctions can be lifted. It seems that the EU does not have a clear understanding of the sanctions' mechanism. This leads to the fact that states impose sanctions, and then there are some internal negotiations between these countries, and these sanctions are either reversed or some amendments are made," Us says.

As an example, he cited the sanctions imposed by the EU against Russia's Kaliningrad region, which were eased after negotiations and, as a result, had no consequences for the Kremlin.

"They banned the supply of goods to the Kaliningrad region, and then suddenly there was a clarification that it was not allowed by car, but it was allowed by rail. And it turned out that Europe itself lifted its sanctions. So, because there are no clear rules for the implementation of sanctions, these sanctions can be slightly "adjusted," the expert summarized.
