US President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly hinted that he plans to cut aid to Ukraine. Britain and France want to prevent this.
This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to The Telegraph.
The publication notes that on Monday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron. They are expected to make a last-ditch effort to thwart Trump's efforts to reduce US support for Ukraine.
In particular, the two leaders will discuss whether it is possible to persuade the current US President Joe Biden to give Ukraine permission to launch Storm Shadow missiles deep into Russia.
According to The Telegraph, London hopes that Biden will finally give the approval that Kyiv has been trying to get for several months.
These efforts come at a time when world leaders are trying to understand how radically Trump, who won the US presidential election last week, intends to change America's policy toward Ukraine.
The publication recalls that throughout his presidential campaign, Trump spoke of ending the war in Ukraine from “day one,” which raised fears that he would force Kyiv to accept territories ceded to Russia.
“We really want to make sure that we can make the most of the time until January 20 (when Trump becomes president), and not just put everything off until the next administration,” one source said.
Another source said that Biden is expected to “open the taps” by handing over additional financial assistance to Kyiv a few weeks before he leaves the White House.
Starmer and Macron are also expected to discuss the implications of a future Trump presidency for the Middle East and the possibility of a trade war with Europe.
