The European Union is already preparing sanctions against the Georgian authorities. But for them to come into force, a consensus among the 27 member states of the bloc will be needed.
This was stated by the EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Gerczynski, RBC-Ukraine reports citing SOVA.
According to Herczynski, the EU is currently discussing “all measures” against the Georgian authorities.
The ambassador reminded that the EU offered Georgia an association agreement, a free trade agreement, and a visa-free travel agreement. The country was also granted candidate status for EU membership.
“I know that work is underway to prepare sanctions. Achieving unanimity depends on all 27 capitals. I think, I hope, that it will be difficult for any EU capital to ignore the level of violence, the level of brutality. Let's see if the sanctions will be presented on Monday, the preparatory work is indeed underway,” the diplomat said.
