The fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria showed that Russia and Iran's position was weakened. They could not help their ally.
According to RBC-Ukraine, this was stated in an interview with CNN by US Deputy National Security Advisor John F. Feiner.
Mr. Finer noted that both Moscow and Iran were “caught off guard” by the events in Syria, and it was not just a mistake or an accident.
“The Assad regime has actually become a joint Russian-Iranian project in Syria, and both of these partners in the joint project could no longer provide the support that the regime needed to survive, and that's a big part of why it's no longer in power,” he added.
The US Deputy National Security Advisor pointed out that this is not the first loss for Iran in the Middle East this year. Before that, Hamas and Hezbollah were “greatly weakened,” and Iranian attempts to strike Israel were unsuccessful.
“This is not a moment of strength for Iran, and I'll let others speculate on the implications of that, but it is, frankly, the result of the work of the United States and our partners over the past year that has brought us to this point,” he said.-
Mr. Feiner also emphasized that the war in Ukraine “has shown what kind of security partner Russia can be for other countries.”
