Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he trusts Russia as much as the West.
Erdogan said this during an interview with PBS in New York, where he is participating in the UN General Assembly.
Explaining his recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Erdogan said that he had failed to get him to restore the Black Sea Grain Initiative, but that he had secured a commitment from Russia to supply 1 million tons of grain to Africa.
"I have no reason not to trust them," Erdogan said.
"As reliable as the West is, Russia is also reliable. For the past 50 years, we have been waiting on the EU's doorstep, and at this moment I trust Russia as much as I trust the West," the Turkish president added.
