ISW analyzed the pace of the AFU counteroffensive

Jul 10, 2023

In the course of their counteroffensive, the Ukrainian military deliberately maintains a slower pace of advance to preserve the combat power of the Defense Forces and to deplete the manpower and equipment of the Russian occupiers.

This is the opinion of the Institute for War Studies analysts in a recent report.

On July 9, the Armed Forces of Ukraine conducted counteroffensive operations in at least three areas of the front.

Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander of the Ukrainian Army, said that Ukrainian soldiers are successfully continuing the offensive in the Bakhmut sector. Ukrainian officials reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to conduct counter-offensive operations in the Berdiansk and Melitopol directions.

The Russian Ministry of Defense and Kremlin-linked bloggers claimed that the Ukrainian Defense Forces were conducting attacks in the western part of Zaporizhzhia region. The Russian "military commander" claimed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces were attacking Russian positions in small groups and targeting rear positions, warehouses, and infrastructure.

Ukrainian military officials also confirmed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue their campaigns to block the enemy in the south and east of the country.
