Russia, China, and Iran may spread disinformation during the European Parliament elections in early June.

This was stated by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, RBC-Ukraine reports with reference to Reuters.

"It's something we've been warning about for a long time. It's actually not just a threat," Metzola said.

According to her, disinformation will be "very actively used" during the June 6-9 vote to elect the next five-year parliament.

Metsola noted that the EU has tools at its disposal, such as a new law that requires social networks to remove illegal content and reduce the risks of electoral manipulation, which may include fake images or impersonating another voter.

However, as the President of the European Parliament emphasized, new EU laws alone were not enough.

Metsola named Russia, China, and Iran as potential sources of disinformation, as well as political parties and organizations within the EU, which try to attract the attention of voters with lies.

"Maybe we've ignored it for too long. I think we have to strongly resist that narrative. It's a lot easier to run a black-and-white campaign than 1,000 shades of gray in the middle of a campaign. But we have to be ready for it," she said.
