Pope Francis may support a peace agreement, which is likely to help US President-elect Donald Trump convince Ukraine of the need for territorial concessions to Russia.
This was stated by Hungarian Ambassador to the Vatican Eduard Habsburg, RBC-Ukraine reports citing The Independent.
According to him, the pontiff's recent visit to Hungary demonstrates his sympathy for the country and a common desire to end the war in Ukraine. He noted that against this background, Pope Francis can support a peaceful solution that does not meet with the approval of NATO and most European countries.
“With the new President Trump, we have an ally who has made it clear, even in his speech on election night, that he wants to end wars, including the war in Ukraine. This fills me with hope,” the ambassador emphasized.
Habsburg noted that during the last Trump presidency, political relations between Hungary and the United States were at their peak. Negotiations between the two countries were central to resolving international conflicts.
“We do have hope that Hungarian-American political cooperation will return to its peak: we share similar views on peace, illegal migration, and family protection. I believe that now there is a better chance than ever that peace will finally return to Ukraine after almost a thousand days of war,” Habsburg said.-
