Putin hopes to reset Russia-US relations on his own terms - ISW

Nov 11, 2024

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has suggested that US President-elect Donald Trump will listen to the Kremlin's interests and preferences without offering any concessions or benefits in return.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

During his speech at the Valdai Forum on November 7, Putin declared his openness to discussions aimed at “restoring” Russian-American relations.

However, he noted that the United States should initiate these talks. He also hinted that Moscow would consider a reset of relations between the two countries only if sanctions against Russia were lifted and support for Ukraine was ended - conditions that benefit only Russia and offer no benefit to the United States.

On November 8, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Putin's statement about negotiations with the United States does not mean a change in Russia's military goals in Ukraine. On the contrary, Moscow's goals remain unchanged.

“Putin may be trying to position himself as reaching out to Trump. However, he is signaling to his domestic audience that the Kremlin is unwilling to compromise any aspect of its maximalist goals in Ukraine or on the wider world stage,” ISW states.
