The Council of the European Union on Thursday approved the EU's accession to the Convention on Preventing and combating violence against Women and domestic violence, known as the Istanbul Convention.

This is stated in the message of the EU Council.

The EU's accession to the Istanbul Convention should contribute to efforts to ensure equality between women and men.

"Violence against women is not only a criminal offense but also an extreme consequence of discrimination rooted in gender inequality. At the same time, violence against women contributes to the preservation and reinforcement of this inequality," the Council of the European Union said.

The decision means that the EU joins the convention in the context of EU public administration institutions and practices, as well as in relation to issues related to judicial cooperation in criminal matters, asylum, and nonrefoulement.
