The winner of the US presidential election, Donald Trump, may try to negotiate with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to end the war against Ukraine. But such an agreement would likely not be in the interests of Europe and Ukraine.
This was stated by Czech President Petr Pavel, RBC-Ukraine reports citing Aktuality.sk.
During his speech at the opening of the IISS Prague Defense Summit conference in Prague on Friday, the Czech leader noted that the assistance from the notional West to Ukraine was not fast enough, which allowed the Russian occupiers to make progress.
“My point of view is probably less politically correct, but I will say it anyway. From the very beginning, we did not do enough. Only a few countries - and I am proud that the Czech Republic was among them - provided Ukraine with everything it needed and what we could give it. But the beginning of military support was quite slow, and I honestly say that this slow assistance allowed Russia to advance through Ukrainian territory, despite all the problems with command and logistics that they had at the time,” he said.
According to Pavel, Western supplies of military equipment and financial assistance were not enough to win the war in Ukraine.
The Czech president added that the situation at the front had come to a “certain deadlock”, but now it is “developing more in favor of Russia than Ukraine”.
“And in this situation, it is difficult to encourage both sides to negotiate,” the Czech leader said.-
Pavel said that many countries are currently waiting for a new administration in the United States and hope that Trump will “deliver the changes” he promised when he said he would end Russia's war with Ukraine within 24 hours.
However, Pavel does not believe this is possible. In addition, the Czech president thinks that Trump will make efforts to end the war and try to strike a deal with Putin.
However, according to the Czech leader, such an agreement “probably would not be in the interests of Ukraine or Europe, as it would probably include the transfer of part of the occupied territory of Ukraine to Russia or a condition for Ukraine that it cannot become a NATO member for at least 20 years.”
