"As for Ukraine's accession to NATO, I would remind you that both the Alliance and the United States have stated that they must first win this war," Kirby said.
He also noted that after the war is over, Ukraine "will still have a long border with Russia and a constant security threat to the Ukrainian people."
According to Kirby, Joe Biden "believes that NATO is the future of Ukraine."
"There are a lot of things that need to be done before they can join the Alliance, just like any other member," he added.-
Kirby emphasized that the bilateral security agreement will help Ukraine protect itself while they work to secure "everything they need."
"They can apply to join NATO. And we believe that NATO is the future of Ukraine, and we will work with them every step of the way to make that happen," he concluded.-
