Ukrainian weapons can “get” about a third of Russia's nuclear arsenal

Nov 6, 2024

The long-range drones and missiles that Ukraine has can attack a large number of Russia's nuclear storage facilities. About a third of the aggressor country's nuclear arsenal is in an “unreliable position”.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Foreign Affairs.

According to the publication, about 30 percent of the approximately 5,580 Russian nuclear warheads are stored in places that are accessible to Ukrainian long-range weapons.

The journalists noted that since Ukrainian drones are already reaching Moscow, at least 14 Russian nuclear storage facilities are also within their range. Among them:

  • at least two are located at a distance of less than 160 kilometers from the border with Ukraine;

another five are located less than 320 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.

Foreign Affairs notes that Russia's unwillingness to properly secure its nuclear arsenals in the western part of the country “is a terrible danger.”

According to the journalists, Russia may refuse to move its nuclear arsenal away from the border for several reasons. One of them is the reluctance of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to show weakness, and the other is the lack of awareness of the Russian leadership of the dangers of such storage of warheads.

Nuclear missiles are particularly vulnerable when they are transported for maintenance. They are sent to railroad yards.
