UN Secretary-General Guterres arrives in Russia for the BRICS summit

Oct 23, 2024

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Kazan, Russia, on an unannounced visit on the day of the three-day BRICS summit. One of the goals of this event is to demonstrate the relative nature of the political isolation of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry in X, Voice of America and Radio Liberty.

According to Radio Liberty, Putin will meet with Guterres on the last day of the summit.

White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby told Voice of America that due to Russia's isolation on the world stage, Putin “is forced to take radical steps to support his currency and to support his war economy.”

In total, Russia expects 22 leaders to attend the summit, including Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry responded to the information about the possible participation of the UN Secretary General in the summit earlier.

“The UN Secretary-General declined Ukraine's invitation to the first Global Peace Summit in Switzerland. However, he accepted an invitation to Kazan from war criminal Putin. This is a wrong choice that does not contribute to the cause of peace. It only damages the reputation of the UN,” the Foreign Ministry said in a post on social network X.
