Zelensky on Ukraine's invitation to NATO

Oct 22, 2024

Most NATO countries support Ukraine's invitation to join the Alliance. But several countries remain cautious.

This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a meeting with journalists, an RBC-Ukraine correspondent reports.

“I can say what we see in general. Today we see the consensus of most NATO countries and the restrained position of several countries (we are talking about inviting Ukraine to NATO - ed.). We will work with this,” the Head of State said.

He clarified that France's support and confidence in this issue is noticeable. Britain and Italy will also support Ukraine.

“As for Germany's reaction, we believe that the situation today mostly depends on the United States. We believe that they are consolidating their views on NATO, and this has an impact on, for example, Hungary and Slovakia,” Zelenskyy emphasized.

According to him, Ukraine expects a more positive US position on this issue after the election. And this is not due to the change of president, but to the change of focus in the United States since the election. Now any harsh statements from Washington are inappropriate, as they do not want “unnecessary risks.”

Zelenskyy also emphasized that he has a very good relationship with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and is grateful to Germany for its help. But now Berlin is skeptical about Ukraine's accession to NATO.
