As noted in the summary, Goryachev was the chief of staff of 35th Combined Arms Army (35 CAA).

According to British intelligence, with 35 CAA’s nominated commander, General-Lieutenant Alexandr Sanchik, reported to be filling a gap in a higher HQ, there is a realistic possibility that Goryachev was the acting army commander at the time of his death.

Goryachev is the first Russian general to be killed in Ukraine since the beginning of 2023.

"It continues a war record which has been both difficult and controversial for 35th CAA: in March 2022 elements of the army were present during the massacre of civilians in Bucha, and in June 2022 the force was largely wiped out near Izium," the British Ministry of Defense said.

According to RBC-Ukraine, Russian media reported that Major General Sergei Goryachev was killed in the Zaporizhzhia sector as a result of a rocket attack. This is the tenth Russian general to be killed in the full-scale war.

It was also reported that Goryachev headed the Russian occupation contingent in Transnistria, commanded a military base in Tajikistan, and the Khabarovsk training center.

At the beginning of the invasion, he was the commander of the 5th Separate Tank Brigade. A year into the full-scale war, he was promoted to deputy commander of the 35th Combined Arms Army. Goryachev became a major general and was also appointed chief of staff of the army.
