"In developing the steps to be taken to support Ukraine, we also adhere to our principled position of not making NATO a party to the war," Erdogan said at Ankara airport before flying to Washington.

At the same time, he assured Turkey's support for Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence.

Erdogan also called on the allies to lift trade restrictions on defense trade with his country.

"Implementing the decisions we made in Vilnius to fight terrorism and remove obstacles to defense trade between allies is important" to strengthen the alliance's "solidarity and spirit of unity", Erdogan said.
