G20 fails to agree on final statement after Russian attack on Ukraine

The leaders of the Group of Twenty (G20) countries, the world's largest economies, are scheduled to meet on November 18 in Brazil for their annual summit. However, the final communiqué is in question.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Reuters.

Sources said that diplomats preparing a joint statement for the summit leaders struggled to come up with a weak proposal on how to resolve Russia's escalating war against Ukraine without even making a vague call for peace without criticizing any of the participants.

Russia's massive air strike on Ukraine on November 17 shook what little consensus they had managed to reach, and European diplomats are pushing for a revision of previously agreed language on global conflicts.

The United States responded to the Russian attack by lifting previously imposed restrictions on Ukraine's use of U.S.-made weapons to strike Russian territory.

While China is in Russia's camp on Ukraine, Germany believes it will be harder for Beijing to maintain this position as the conflict has become “global” due to Russia's deployment of North Korean troops, bringing it “closer to China's borders,” another official said.
