Defense concern Rheinmetall has announced that it will supply air defense systems to Ukraine. The success of the 35-mm Gepard anti-aircraft tank in Ukraine emphasizes the effectiveness of gun air defense, especially against cruise missiles and drones.

The concern also praised the modern Skynex system, which is also a cannon system.

It is noted that the system is designed for very close-range air defense operations, where guided missiles are ineffective.

"The use of programmable 35mm Ahead ammunition, developed by Rheinmetall for this very purpose, is significantly cheaper than comparable systems based on guided missiles," the statement said.

It also emphasizes that it is impossible to influence or deflect 35-mm shells with electronic countermeasures.

Rheinmetall says that in the second half of 2023, Ukraine will receive two advanced Skynex air defense systems, including air-launched munitions. The Skynex systems will be installed on new Rheinmetall HX 8×8 military trucks.

At the end of April, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal reported that Skynex short-range air defense systems were already on combat duty in Ukraine.
