German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has assured NATO allies in the Baltic states that they can rely on Berlin to deter Russia.

He said this at the annual Baltic Defense Conference (ABCD) in the Estonian capital Tallinn, DPA reports.

According to the head of the German Defense Ministry, NATO allies in the Baltic region can be sure that Germany will provide them with military support if necessary.

"Germany takes responsibility. And Germany assumes the role of leader," Pistorius assured.

He also confirmed the plans to deploy a Bundeswehr brigade in Lithuania, which envisages a permanent stay of four thousand soldiers and their families in the country, with details to be agreed upon by the end of the year.

Pistorius also assured Ukraine of Berlin's long-term support in its defense against Russia and warned of dire consequences if Russian President Vladimir Putin succeeds in achieving his goals.

"We will stand by the side of Ukrainians as long as it takes. Putin is using vile, criminal, and inhuman methods (in waging war)," he summarized.
