Italy has canceled golden visas for Russians and Belarusians

Aug 8, 2023

The Italian government suspended the participation of Russian and Belarusian citizens in the Investor Visa for Italy program in July 2023, more than a year after the European Commission recommended the abolition of golden visas for Russians and Belarusians due to aggression against Ukraine.

The Italian monthly Altreconomia drew attention to this.

The Italian authorities announced the abolition of the "golden visas" by adding a note on the program's website. It is noted that the Ministry of Economy of Italy made the decision on July 14, 2023, based on the recommendation of the European Commission on March 28, 2022.

According to data obtained by Altreconomia, at least 36 Russian citizens have used the Investor Visa for Italy program during this period, including 32 who received an "investor" visa for a period of two years.

Russians are the largest national group of recipients of Italian "golden visas" in 2022. They are followed by US and British citizens (12 each), and another 23 are citizens from outside the EU, whose nationality is not disclosed for reasons of protecting "privacy."
