The purpose of such joint developments is to strengthen the deterrence of possible threats.

According to several officials, this will be the second joint development of an interceptor missile between Japan and the United States after the SM3 Block 2A, which was completed in 2017.

In connection with the Japan-US-South Korea summit on Friday in the United States, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and US President Joe Biden will hold individual talks, which will make adjustments to the announcement of the agreements as part of the Agreement.
